One of the co-founders went through the 12-step program. After completing it he asked his counselor “what is the 13th step?” She said it’s connection, and community. 

He found himself getting involved with community events such as beach volleyball but other than word  of mouth, had to spend a lot of time weeding through websites that sometimes had sober events but commonly were mingled in with cocktail parties and the like. 

When ready to start dating he went down the modern path to connect – dating apps. While on the dating apps he knew the often uncomfortable conversation about sobriety would have to come up, which got him thinking about the need for sober people to meet others outside of their meetings. 

“What if there was a dating app for people in recovery that would directly address the elephant in the room?” 

“What if there was an app for sober people to find more than romantic relationships – fun and friendship?”

He started shopping the idea with friends also in  recovery and solidified the need was real, and that’s how the 13th Step was born. 

Knowing the name had a similar connotation to “Netflix and chill”, we thought, that’s fun! And that’s what this is all about, a welcoming, judgement free group of people seeking to enjoy life, develop quality friendships and maybe even find love.
